Over the last decade there has been a resurgence of romance in rail travel, and Italy is now the star. The La Dolce Vita Orient Express, which departed from Rome on its inaugural journey on April 4 2025, invites guests to explore the soul of the country through slow travel and curated experiences. With mid century glamor and a focus on cultural immersion, this train sets a new standard for luxury on rails.
The train itself is a work of art. Twelve carriages accommodate thirty one cabins in three categories. Eighteen suites, twelve deluxe cabins and one signature suite provide generous space, double beds, seating areas and private bathrooms. The interiors, crafted by Dimorestudio, pay homage to the golden age of Italian design. Geometric patterns, minimalist palettes and references to the work of Gio Ponti, Gae Aulenti and Osvaldo Borsani create a sophisticated yet playful atmosphere. A lounge at Roma Ostiense Station, designed by artist architect Hugo Toro, prepares guests for the journey with aperitivo and live music.
The journeys are as alluring as the decor. Eight itineraries weave across fourteen regions, from the canals of Venice and the coves of Portofino to the truffle paths of Piedmont and the ancient stones of Matera. There are two night routes linking Rome with Venice and Siena, a journey from Rome to Sicily that crosses the straits on the world’s only passenger rail ferry, and thematic experiences such as “Tastes of Tuscan Vineyards” which visits Montalcino. Each trip embraces the philosophy of slow travel, allowing time for excursions to vineyards, archaeological sites and coastal villages.
Life on board is equally indulgent. Chef Heinz Beck of Rome’s La Pergola oversees the culinary program. Inspired by the regions traversed, menus feature seasonal ingredients and three star techniques. Guests enjoy lunches and dinners in an elegant restaurant car, afternoon tea and aperitivo in a dedicated bar with live music and a selection of Italian wines. The fare includes accommodation, meals, beverages, entertainment and transfers, with optional bespoke experiences for an additional fee. Prices begin around three thousand eight hundred dollars per person per night in a deluxe cabin.
